The Butterfly and the Cross

The business of humans usually is of little interest to butterflies, but on this day the butterflies took notice of the crowd.  The butterflies flew closer to the hill called Golgotha.

A Giant Man vs. a Giant Faith
Aaron was no soldier.  He was only a helper who brought water to the soldiers and cleaned their sandals and swords.  “When is someone brave going to come and kill this giant?” he would ask himself each day.
A Father’s Miracle
“Pray for a miracle.”  Nathan’s father looked deeply into his eyes.  “Only Yahweh can heal me.”  With that, Nathan’s father turned and walked toward the edge of town.  Nathan watched him grow further and further away until he could no longer see his father through his tears.
A Donkey’s Tale
What could I do?  The angel of the lord stood in front of me with a flaming sword, and my maters was beating and kicking me to make me go forward.  I gave up.  I sank down onto the ground with Balaam still on my back and refused to move.
A Child Sees Jesus
At first the women and children held back a little while the men went forward and started chatting.  Jesus was so friendly!  And his laugh—no one could resist laughing with him!
A Lunch with Jesus
They had been swimming for quite a while when they looked up and saw a boat approaching.  It was just a regular fishing boat but the men inside weren’t fishing.  Isaac shouted, “Look, same, one of the men in the boat looks like that man, Jesus!"
The Little Lost Lamb
Rafi tried to bleat but hew as so weak the first try didn’t make it past his dry lips.  He tried again and a small muffled sound came out.  The shepherd heard it.  He knew his sheep.  He knew them when they were strong and loud, and he knew hem when they were weak and afraid.  He ran to the lost lamb.

Why is Nana telling Bible stories?

When Jesus wanted to explain his Father, he could have drawn references to complex theology in the Jews’ existing scripture.  Instead he told stories—stories so simple and true that the people who heard them were amazed.
And though they might have forgotten theology—they never forgot the stories.

Like the one about a shepherd who left his 99 sheep to rescue the lamb that had wandered off.

Or the dignified landowner who hiked up his robes and ran helter-skelter down the road to welcome home a son who had rejected him.

How does Nana describe the rebirth inside us when we give our hearts to Jesus?  How does she explain Christ’s death in relation to our new life?  With the unforgettable story of a butterfly who lands on Jesus’ cross.
